Schwerthoffer Leads Tribunes Over Purchase
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Monroe softball team took the lead late in the game in a 13-6 victory over SUNY Purchase on Monday. The game was tied at six with batting in the top of the seventh when Taylor Malchoff doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs.
Carly Sobaszek led the Tribunes to victory by driving in five runs. Sobaszek went 3-for-5 at the plate, driving in runs on a single in the first, a double in the fifth, and a double in the seventh.
In the first inning, Monroe got their offense started scoring on a Sobaszek single.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, SUNY Purchase tied things up at six. Rebecca Bronzi drove in one when Bronzi singled.
Allie Schwerthoffer was in the circle for Monroe. The righty surrendered six runs on ten hits over five and a third innings, striking out five and walking zero.
Tara Sasso started the game for SUNY Purchase. The pitcher went six innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits and striking out three. Brianna Palermo threw one inning in relief.
Monroe tallied 12 hits. Sobaszek, Kailee DiGiacco, and Amelia Arena each collected multiple hits for the Tribunes. Sobaszek led the team with three hits in five at bats.
SUNY Purchase racked up 12 hits. Palermo, Jade D'Errico, Kelly Jennings, and Bronzi each managed multiple hits for SUNY Purchase. Palermo went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead SUNY Purchase in hits.
