Tribunes Split Double-Header with Cayuga Spartans in Home Opener
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Monroe Community College Tribunes opened up their home schedule on Sunday with a double-header against the Cayuga Community College Spartans. The Tribunes won the first game by a score of 11-2. The Spartans won the second game by a score of 6-2 despite a late rally by the Tribunes. The split moves the Tribunes record to 6-2.
Game One:
The Tribunes came out swinging and got their runners into scoring position early. By the end of the first inning, the Tribunes held a 3-0 lead. Following a scoreless second inning by both squads, the Tribunes tallied four runs in both the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 11-0. The Spartans would finally get on the board in the fifth inning, putting up two runs of their own in the fifth inning. These would be their only runs scored in the game. Both teams went scoreless in the final two innings, ending the game with a score of 11-2 in favor of the Tribunes. Connor Sackett went 4-4 from the plate with three singles, a double, and two RBIs. Lucas Brown went 3-4 from the plate with two singles, a triple, and two RBIs. Joe Wintermute went 2-4 from the plate with two doubles. Joe Grzeskowiak went 1-2 from the plate with a single, two RBIs, and was credited with two sacrifice flies. CJ Phelps went 1-2 from the plate with a double, one RBI, and was walked twice. Evan Brock went 1-2 from the plate with a single and was walked twice. Alex Simons went 0-2 from the plate, was walked once, had one RBI, and was credited with a sacrifice fly. Tobey Wright had two RBIs. Zach Allen pitched 6.0 innings, facing 24 batters, throwing 80 pitches, allowing six hits, two runs, one earned run, and striking out seven. Lucas Connors pitched 1.0 innings, facing three batters, and throwing eight pitches.
Game Two:
The Tribunes struggled to get things going in the second game of the day. Neither team was able to tally a run in the first two innings leaving the score 0-0 heading into the third. The Spartans opened up the scoring in the third inning by virtue of a three-run home run to take a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth. The Spartans put up one run in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 4-0. The Tribunes cut the lead in half thanks to an Evan Brock home run in the bottom of the fourth inning bringing the score to 4-2. The Spartans would extend their lead by another run in the fifth inning. While the sixth inning was scoreless for both teams, the seventh inning had everyone on the edge of their seats. The Spartans scored one more run to extend their lead to 6-2. The Tribunes would begin to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, eventually loading the bases with a chance to tie the game. However, they came up just short. The score remained 6-2 in favor of the Spartans. Evan Brock went 1-2 from the plate with a home run, two RBIs, and was walked once. Joe Grzeskowiak went 1-3 from the plate with a single, one stolen base, and was walked once. Joe Wintermute went 1-4 from the plate with a single and had one stolen base. Tobey Wright went 1-4 from the plate with a double. CJ Phelps went 1-2 from the plate with a single and was walked once. Lucas Brown went 1-1 from the plate with a single. Lucas West pitched 5.0 innings, facing 23 batters, throwing 56 pitches, allowing five hits, five runs, two earned runs, striking out four, and giving up one home run. Will Russotti pitched 2.0 innings, facing ten batters, throwing 40 pitches, allowing three hits, one run, one earned run, walked one, and struck out two.

The Tribunes will return to action in a home double-header against the Erie Community College Kats on Tuesday, March 26th, 2024 starting at 1:00pm.
