Monroe Community College Athletics
Since its inception in 1962, the Monroe Community College Athletics Program has developed a rich and storied tradition of success as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The program has proudly been a major participant on the local, regional, and national levels. MCC Athletics started during the 1962-1963 academic year with men’s basketball, coached by the college’s first athletic director, George C. Monagan. The men’s soccer and baseball teams, pioneered by Joe Mancarella and H. David Chamberlain, respectively, followed the next year. Those were the beginnings of a nationally-renowned program that has continued to gain strength.
The history of Monroe Community College Athletics is one that is decorated in numerous regional, district, and national championships. Throughout the years, the program has also produced many local, regional, and national leaders. The philosophy of the MCC Athletics Program is to provide opportunities for student-athletes to strengthen the foundational building blocks of learning, in the classroom and through athletic competition. To this point, the college has always been on the cutting edge in providing its students the best facilities to compete in, the best coaches to coach them, and the best teachers to instruct them. The results are in, and the successes are many.

In 2003, the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) devised a platform that honored junior college athletic programs based on competition at NJCAA Championship events. The NATYCAA Awards Program provided a way to rank the best overall athletic departments in the nation. MCC took first place in the NATYCAA Cup in both 2006 and 2007 and finished runner-up on four other occasions. The Tribunes have never finished outside the Top 15 for this prestigious honor.
