Lady Tribunes wrap up regular season on high note
Up next is the district tournament in two weeks.
SANBORN, NY - Rayia McKnight (Baltimore, MD/Western) came off the bench to register a season-high 22 points as the MCC women's basketball team defeated Niagara County CC 95-52 Saturday afternoon.
McKnight finished 10-of-13 from the floor and added seven rebounds for Monroe, which wraps up the regular season with a record of 23-5. MCC will move on to a district tournament, hosted by Harford Community College, starting on March 7.
The Tribunes were hot right out of the gates. MCC shot over 52 percent from the field and raced to a 57-23 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. Tyra Jones (Rochester, NY/East) scored 13 points in the first half and McKnight added 12 on 5-of-5 shooting.
Jones had a strong all-around game, finishing with 15 points, eight rebounds, and seven steals. Tyese Purvis (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) added 13 points and five steals, and Donisha Watson (Bronx, NY/Mt. Vernon) chipped in with 13 rebounds and three blocked shots.
MCC scored 40 points off 29 Niagara turnovers. They also held an incredible 59-3 edge in bench scoring.
