ROCHESTER - The fourth-ranked Genesee Community College Cougars raced to an 8-1 lead after one quarter and held off Monroe the rest of the way to earn a 16-7 Region III men's lacrosse victory Wednesday.
The loss was the first of the season for the ninth-ranked Tribunes (3-1). MCC is back in action at home on Friday for a 4 p.m. start against Anne Arundel.
Genesee scored the first two goals of the game before Monroe got on the board to make it 2-1. However, the Cougars notched the next six to close out the quarter with an 8-1 lead.
The Tribunes got goals from David Lehman and Jake Moss in the second quarter, but GCC also scored twice to take a 10-3 lead into the break.
The Cougars then outscored Monroe 4-3 in the third and 2-1 in the fourth to clinch the victory.
Jeremy Powers finished with a pair of goals and Matt McDowell chipped in with a goal and an assist for MCC. Lehman, Moss, Ian Mohr, and Kasey Olsen all added one goal apiece.
The Tribunes finished 5-for-7 on man-up opportunities, but faceoffs were an issue as the Cougars controlled possession for much of the contest.
