Monroe tops Hagerstown in Shapiro opener
A big advantage on the boards keys MCC to victory.
ROCHESTER - A tenacious MCC Tribunes squad opened the first annual Murph Shapiro Men's Basketball Tournament with an impressive 98-82 victory over Hagerstown CC Saturday evening.
Monroe (2-1) was aggressive from the start and pulled down rebounds at will. In the end, MCC carried a huge 48-25 advantage on the glass to help key the win.
Anthony Hemingway and Elijah Tillman led a balanced offensive attack with 14 points apiece. Isaiah Davis added 13 and Davon Jackson tallied 12 as four players hit for double figures. Davis and Tillman had eight rebounds each, and Emmanuel Joseph came off the bench to put up nine points and seven boards.
Damon Miraud and Dykweil Bryan each added eight points.
The Tribunes controlled the paint on both ends of the floor. MCC finished with 56 points in the paint, compared to 28 for Hagerstown. Monroe also turned the Hawks' 20 turnovers into 28 points.
The Shapiro tournament concludes Sunday. Hagerstown and Sullivan play at 1 p.m., followed by Cecil and Monroe at 3 p.m.
Sullivan defeated Cecil in an exciting game, 106-104, in Saturday's other contest.
