Kats pull away to defeat Monroe

BUFFALO - After splitting the first two sets, the Erie Kats won the next two to pull away for a 3-1 win over Monroe in a Western New York Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday evening.
With the win, Erie locked up the No. 2 seed at the conference tournament on Oct. 21 at Genesee Community College. MCC will be the third seed.
ECC won the first set 25-22 before the Tribunes battled back to take the second 25-19 and tie the match at one. The Kats then responded by winning 25-16, 25-22 in the third and fourth to clinch the match.
Tessa Engel paced Monroe with 16 kills and 22 digs. Andrea Green added eight kills, 17 digs, and six blocks, while Chelsea Steinruck contributed 11 digs.
Jessie Blumenfeld tallied 32 assists and 21 digs. Cherelle Grant chipped in with seven kills and three blocks.
