Tribunes down Genesee
Monroe rolls to a three-set win over conference rival.
ROCHESTER - The MCC volleyball team picked up a key Western New York Athletic Conference and Region III victory on Thursday, taking down Genesee Community College in straight sets.
The Tribunes (12-1 overall) and Cougars entered the evening tied for fourth in the Region III standings with matching 5-1 records. But it was Monroe that made a statement on its home court, taking the match 25-20, 25-9, 25-19.
MCC jumped out to a quick start in the first set behind strong service from Alyssa Coates and Jala McFadden. A pair of kills from Chelsea Steinruck and another from Andrea Green made it 14-3.
The Tribunes led 22-12 before the Cougars rattled off six straight to jump back into it. A timeout from Monroe helped restore order as MCC regained control. A beautiful tip from Jessie Blumenfeld made it set point, and Tessa Engel finished it off with a kill.
Monroe took command early in the second set, using a pair of block kills from Cherelle Grant to go up 8-0. It was more of the same throughout the remainder of the second set as well as the third as the Tribunes put together one of their most complete matches of the season.
Engel finished with 12 kills and eight digs to pace MCC. Steinruck added eight kills and 12 digs, while Green also registered eight kills.
Blumenfeld totaled 28 assists and 10 digs. Coates chipped in with nine digs, and McFadden had eight digs and two aces.
