Monroe women claim 14th straight regional championship
VanDermeer named Swimmer of the Meet for Tribunes.
ROCHESTER - The MCC men's and women's swimming and diving teams claimed their respective regional titles at the Region III/Northeast District championship meet this weekend.
The Monroe men totaled 631 points over the three-day meet to secure both regional and district titles. The women had 414 points to capture the regional crown.
Fashion Institute of Technology had 512 total points to take Northeast District honors on the women's side.
It was the 20th Region III championship for the Monroe men, as well as their 18th district title. For the Lady Tribunes, it was their 14th straight regional crown and 21st overall.
MCC boasted both the Male and Female Swimmers of the Meet. Freshman Gabriel Knaut took home the award for the men by winning three events. Sophomore Ashley VanDermeer captured three titles as well to earn the accolade on the women's side.
Knaut kicked things off Friday with a win in the 50 free in at time of 21.50. He followed with a victory in the 200 free (1:48.02) on Saturday, and took home the 100 free (47.36) on Sunday. He was also part of four winning relays.
VanDermeer won three events in three days as well. She was victorious in the 200 IM on Friday in a time of 2:23.79. She then took first in the grueling 400 IM (5:06.06) by almost 40 seconds on Saturday, and touched first in the 200 back (2:21.23) by a tenth of a second on Sunday.
The MCC coaching staff of Dan Dubois, Dale Pearce, and John Rodman helped the Tribunes take home the Regional/District Men's Coach of the year Award.
