NEW ROCHELLE, New York - When the two Monroes take to the pitch, fans usually get their money's worth.
Saturday's NJCAA Top-10 matchup was no different, as the eighth-ranked Monroe College Mustangs scored early in overtime to defeat the second-ranked Monroe Community College Tribunes 2-1 in a tense, early-season women's soccer battle.
Yolanda Albalat and the Mustangs wasted no time in the extra session, taking a feed from Juliana Pires and sneaking it past Tribune keeper Kirsten Lane for the game-winning score. It was the season opener for Monroe College, while MCC fell to 2-1-0 on the season.
The Tribunes took the lead early, as Roosa Ariyo scored in the 13th minute off a Paige McGrath assist. The score stayed that way for much of the contest, until Pires tied it up in the 75th minute.
Lane kept the Mustangs from taking the lead with a pair of saves not long after the equalizer. The Tribune defense also turned away a Monroe corner opportunity in the 88th minute, while MCC couldn't capitalize on their own corner with less than a minute remaining in regulation.
Lane finished with six saves on the game.
