Lady Tribs rout Niagara, advance to finals
MCC will face Mercyhurst for the Region III title.
ROCHESTER - Regional Player of the Year Tyese Purvis led all scorers with 23 as the MCC women's basketball team defeated Niagara County Community College 85-52 in the Region III, Division II semifinals Saturday.
The top-seeded Tribunes (25-1) will face third-seeded Mercyhurst North East at 12 p.m. Sunday for the title and a spot in the NJCAA national tournament.
Purvis, who earned the region's top honors just a year removed from major knee surgery, also had seven steals as the Tribunes forced 30 Thunderwolf miscues on the afternoon.
MCC also held a 52-39 edge on the glass, which allowed the Tribunes to attempt 20 more shots than Niagara.
Fannisha Price had a season-high 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds for Monroe. The sophomore forward was 6-for-7 from the floor.
Rose Ayala also had a double-double, coming off the bench to register 10 points and 11 boards. Bailey Hixson chipped in with 12 points and Adre'onia Coleman added eight points, six assists, and three steals.
Purvis was joined on the all-Region first team by Hixson and Tolulope Ogunrinde, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Kiki Bynes and Deja Carroll were named to the second team, and Ayala was a third-team selection.
