Lady Tribs hold off Jamestown
Monroe has won 13 straight.
JAMESTOWN, New York - The MCC women's basketball team faced a stiff test from host Jamestown Community College Thursday evening, but the Tribunes were able to come away with a 73-63 victory to run their winning streak to 13.
Monroe stayed perfect in WNYAC play at 4-0 and moved to 18-1 overall. The Tribunes are ranked sixth in NJCAA Division II.
The teams traded baskets, as well as the lead, over the first 20 minutes. Deja Carroll had a bucket and a free throw, and Kiki Bynes scored late in the period to give the Tribunes a 41-34 lead at the intermission.
The Jayhawks cut into the lead in the second half and trailed 50-49 after a pair of Elle Reed free throws with 13:05 remaining. But Rose Ayala answered with a three-point play, Tyese Purvis hit a bucket, and Ayala scored again to restore an eight-point advantage midway through.
Jamestown would cut the lead to four on two other occasions but could come no closer. Ayala converted another three-point play, and Bynes put it away with a pair of free throws late.
Bynes finished with a team-high 20 points to go along with nine assists and three steals to lead Monroe. Ayala had a huge performance off the bench with 16 points and eight rebounds, and Carroll finished in double figures with 13.
MCC finished with a 40-25 advantage on the glass and converted 18 second-chance points, compared to just five for JCC. The Monroe bench outscored their Jayhawk counterparts 29-4.
