ROCHESTER - Behind a stifling defensive effort, the MCC women's basketball team won the 2014 Pete Pavia memorial Scholarship Tournament with a 76-47 win over Cincinnati State Sunday.
The Tribunes (10-1) held the Surge to 30 percent shooting (15-for-50) while forcing 21 turnovers. Cincinnati hit just 4-of-24 shots in the first half as MCC built a 39-19 lead at the break.
Tournament MVP Tyese Purvis had 15 points and five assists for Monroe. Tolulope Ogunrinde chipped in with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Bailey Hixson and Kiki Bynes had 14 points apiece.
Ogunrinde and Hixson joined Purvis on the All-Tournament team.
The Tribunes started the game on a 17-2 run. Purvis and Ogunrinde had six each during the spurt, while Hixson added a 3.
The Surge came within 10, but Monroe then closed the half on a 14-4 run. That was punctuated by a 3-pointer from Deja Carroll with 28 seconds left and a layup by Bynes at the buzzer.
