ROCHESTER - Othman Gherab's goal in the 104th minute was the difference as the Monroe College Mustangs escaped DiMarco Field with a 2-1 victory over Monroe Community College in an exciting men's soccer match Saturday afternoon.
Gherab's goal helped the seventh-ranked Mustangs (8-1-1) leave town with the win over a defensive-minded Tribune squad that kept the potent Monroe College attack at bay for most of the day.
After a scoreless first half, the Mustangs struck in the 57th minute to take a 1-0 lead. A Tribune giveaway in the box ended up on the foot of Luca Erhardt, who controlled the ball and put it past keeper Kyle Bimek.
MCC responded in dramatic fashion down the stretch to send it to the extra sessions. Jacques Aristhenes brought the ball up the left sideline toward the Mustang goal. After drawing the Monroe College defender to him, Aristhenes placed a perfect pass ahead to Anthony Short, who finished the play to tie the game at 1.
The teams played to a draw through the remainder of regulation as well as the first overtime, before Gherab came through with the game-winner.
Bimek finished with four saves on the day.
