Kallio's record day leads Monroe past Finger Lakes
The sophomore notches single-game assist mark in the win.
ROCHESTER - Not even the blustery, biting wind and cold could slow down Nick Kallio and the MCC Tribunes Wednesday afternoon.
The sophomore put together a record-setting performance in leading the MCC men's lacrosse team to a 23-2 win over Finger Lakes CC on DiMarco Field.
Kallio scored five goals and dished out a Monroe single-game record nine assists as the Tribunes (4-1) won their fourth consecutive game. The nine assists breaks the old mark of eight, set by Jon Timkey in 2005.
The 14 total points are the second-most in a single game. Scott Micoli put up 15 during a game in 1995.
Monroe has been unstoppable during its winning streak, outscoring opponents 65-9 over that span. The Tribunes dominated from the opening whistle Wednesday and held a 53-13 advantage in total shots on the game. MCC maintained possession for the majority of the contest, thanks in part to a 57-18 edge in ground balls.
TJ Day scored off a Kallio feed just under two minutes into the game, and MCC was off and running. By the time Zack DeFazio scored with 12 seconds to go in the quarter, Monroe was up 6-1.
The Tribunes then outscored FLCC 6-0 in the second quarter to take command heading to the break. Brandon Barnhart had three of the goals and Kallio assisted on three.
Monroe then put up five more in the third and sixth in the fourth to put the game away.
Day finished with five goals and one assist and DeFazio tallied three goals and three assists. Reed Perestam chipped in with two goals and two helpers, while Chantz Sellers and Patrick Brewer scored twice apiece. Austin Gibson takced on a goal and an assist.
Jared George added two assists and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls. Bryce Saba had seven ground balls and caused four turnovers, while Brewer and Adam Witscheber forced three turnovers apiece.
