On The Mark: Latrell Mark Scores 21 Points, #15 Tribs Win Sixth Straight
Rochester, NY - The #15 nationally ranked Monroe Community College Tribunes welcomed Region III rival Tompkins Cortland Community College to Monagan Court to open the New Year of 2025.
For the MCC Men's Basketball Program there was question if the team would have to shake off any rust after the long holiday break. Entering the game the panthers would quickly take a 3-2 lead in the early moments of the game on layup from Marquis Samuels, following a made free throw from the Region III leading scorer Javonte Long.
It didn't take long for the Tribunes to respond with an 8-0 run with made baskets by Omar White, Gemani Charles, Jaheem Tyson, and Alan Garcia.
Monroe shot out of the gate strong, finishing the first half with a staggering 51-23 lead, shooting a 56.3 percent clip from the field.
They didn't let up in the second half, outscoring Tompkins Cortland 44-41 and showcasing their offensive prowess throughout the game. Monroe hit 50.7% of their shots and was particularly sharp from beyond the arc, sinking 13-of-30 three-point attempts.
Latrell Mark was the standout for Monroe, racking up 21 points on 66.7% shooting. He had great support from Gemani Charles, who contributed 14 points, and Alan Garcia added another 12.
Monroe dominated the boards, grabbing 40 rebounds compared to just 21 for Tompkins Cortland.
It was a tough night for Tompkins Cortland, who couldn't find their groove. Javonte Long led the team with 12 points, while Kaleb Nutifafa came off the bench to score 13. Despite some efforts to close the gap, the team shot only 44.9% from the field and struggled with turnovers, giving the ball away 17 times.
On the defensive side, Monroe was relentless, notching 12 steals and applying constant pressure.
With the win the Tribunes picked up their 5th straight win and opened the New Year with a statement team performance.
