Second-half surge lifts Monroe past Genesee
MCC adds to lead in regional standings.
ROCHESTER - The MCC men's basketball team used some blistering second-half shooting to overcome a halftime deficit and come away with a 90-84 victory over GeneseeCommunity College in a Western New York Athletic Conference battle Wednesday evening.
Monroe (14-4) trailed by four at the break before catching fire over the final 20 minutes. The Tribunes were 20-for-31 from the field (64 percent) and 7-for-12 from beyond the arc during that span.
MCC is now 7-1 in the conference and holds a one-game lead over Erie. Genesee is two back at 5-2.
The long range exploits of Gilberto Cue and Noah West, coupled with some inside punch from Mike Kelly Jr. and the drives of Omari Brown helped MCC take command in the second half. West nailed four of his five trifectas over the final 20 minutes, while Cue connected on three of his own. Kelly hit 6-of-8 from the field over the stanza, and Brown consistently got to the hoop to the tune of 14 points to help close things out.
Brown and West each totaled 19 on the night to pace MCC. West also had six assists and four rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Kelly chipped in 17 points and six boards, while Cue finished with 12. Rob Brown came off the bench to tally 11 points.
