Streaking Monroe wins sixth straight
The Tribunes pull away from Erie, 84-67.
ROCHESTER - The backcourt duo of Majesty Brandon and Gilberto Cue led the way as the MCC men defeated Western New York Athletic Conference rival Erie Community College 84-67 on Monagan Court Wednesday evening.
The win was the sixth straight for the Tribunes (8-2), who are a perfect 4-0 in conference play and currently hold a one-game lead over Genesee.
Brandon and Cue combined for 36 points on 13-for-25 shooting from the floor. The freshman guards took turns slashing to the lane for open looks, while also keeping the defense honest by knocking down a pair of 3's apiece.
The Tribunes led 40-34 at the break before opening things up in the second half. The lead was four with 17:42 to play before Monroe embarked on a 29-10 run over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding lead.
MCC was 5-for-6 from 3-point land during the run, including a perfect 3-for-3 from Noah West. Dunks by Mike Kelly Jr. and Jayquan Smith helped punctuate the spurt that effectively put the game away. Erie hit a couple 3's down the stretch, but Monroe was able to stop any rally.
Brandon finished with 19 and Cue had 17 for Monroe. Kelly added 17 points and nine rebounds, while West chipped in with 11. Brien Wilson was a force in the paint all night, totaling six points, nine rebounds, and three blocks.
