ROCHESTER - The MCC baseball team split a doubleheader with Genesee Community College on Thursday, winning the opener 4-1 before dropping the nightcap 6-4.
The Tribunes move to 5-11 on the season.
Pitching was the story in game one for Monroe. Chris Levere started and went 4.2 shutout innings, scattering five hits, walking none, and striking out three.
Liam Devine then came out of the pen to toss the last two and a third, allowing a run on two hits and striking out four for the save. The lefty has struck out 10 over 5.1 innings in his last two appearances.
MCC broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. Phil Ferranti doubled, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a single by Sam Loew.
The Tribunes tacked on two more in the fifth. Cas Sobaszek and Brennan Smith had one-out singles and moved up on a double steal. Trey Brown followed with an RBI base hit to right, and Evan Magill added a sac fly to make it 3-0.
MCC picked up an insurance run in the sixth on a Loew sacrifice fly. Ferranti and Sobaszek finished with two hits apiece.
Monroe fell behind early in game two on a trio of unearned runs and was playing catch-up throughout. The Tribunes cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a Genesee balk, but the Cougars responded with two in the sixth to restore a three-run lead.
MCC rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Sobaszek was hit by a pitch and Smith and Brown worked walks to load the bases.
Jose Ramos followed with a sac fly, but a flyout and groundout ended the threat.
Matt Petrossi started and struck out five over four innings. He allowed four runs, though just one was earned.
