ROCHESTER - The MCC baseball program celebrated the official grand opening of its new facility with a doubleheader sweep of Finger Lakes CC Thursday afternoon.
Scores were 10-0 and 3-1 in favor of the Tribunes, who improved to 12-6 with the sweep.
Jimmy Gutowski (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) tossed the shutout in the opener, which ended after six innings due to the mercy rule. The sophomore right-hander allowed just three hits and struck out four in the complete-game effort.
MCC scored five runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth. Rayshelon Carolina (Willemstad, Curacao/St. Jozef) keyed both innings, driving in a pair with a double in the fourth and two more on another base hit in the sixth. He finished 3-for-4 on the game.
Spencer Scorza (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Jalen Dennis (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) added two hits and an RBI apiece.
Steve Stoklosa (Victor, NY/McQuaid) continued the strong pitching in the nightcap, tossing the complete game while allowing just two hits and striking out four.
The Lakers put across a run in the top of the first, but Monroe got it back in the bottom half. Brad Kaczka (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) had a one-out single, moved to second on an error, and scored on a triple off the bat of Vinny Bomasuto (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk).
The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth. Bomasuto singled and stole second base. Scorza then singled to plate Bomasuto for the go-ahead run.
The Tribunes tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Danny Mendick (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) singled and moved up on a grounder. Cameron Stimpson (Philadelphia, PA/Friends) then hit an infield single, and Mendick scored when the ball got away from the first baseman.
Bomasuto finished 3-for-3, and Scorza, Mendick, and Angel Rosario (Bridgeport, CT/Bullard Havens) added two hits each.
