MCC swims to Region III/Northeast District titles
The Tribunes now prepare for the national meet in March.
ROCHESTER - The MCC men's and women's swimming and diving teams rose once again to the top of the podium, capping yet another terrific weekend by claiming the 2016 Region III/Northeast District championships.
The Monroe men totaled 549 points to claim their 17th consecutive championship. The Lady Tribunes finished with 509 points and secured their 12th straight title. Full results from the weekend can be found here.
Next up for MCC is the NJCAA national meet, which will be held in Florida in March.
Jason Cook and Tamara Miler each won their third event of the weekend to clinch MVP honors. Cook led an MCC contingent that went 1-2-3 in the 100 free by placing first in a time of 50.67.
Miler set a new meet mark by winning the 200 back in a time of 2:12.64. The sophomore's effort was just off the pace of her own regional and district record in the event - 2:12.28 - set in December of 2014.
Herkimer College finished runner-up on the men's side with a team score of 291. Jamestown Community College finished a close third at 284.
Fashion Institute of Technology was second for the women with 283 points. Herkimer placed third at 271.
Megan Mack took first in the 100 free for Monroe in a time of 57.82. That was followed by Cook's victory in the 100, where he edged out teammates Ayoub Tahiri (52.57) and Kyle Callan (52.67).
Angela Bozza followed with her third victory of the weekend, this one in the 200 breast (2:45.86). Mariano Lopez took home the same title for the Monroe men (2:32.67).
Abby Tripp then picked up her third event championship by winning the 200 fly (2:30.82).
The night closed with the 400 free relays, and MCC capped the weekend by winning both. The women's team of Miler, Mack, Kristin Brown, and Tripp placed first in a time of 3:56.45. The men's team - Cook, Callan, Tahiri, and Ilya Shinkeyev - won in 3:26.93.
MCC also swept the 1650 relays, held earlier in the day. Hannah Fedeli won for the women (20:06.80), and Ryan DeWeaver took first for the men (19:24.85).
